What is wood fuel for a biomass boiler?

What exactly would be classed as 'wood fuel' for a biomass boiler? Should I only purchase ready wood matter for a biomass boiler or is it okay to add stuff I source directly such as wood pellets, etc.? How can I be sure I don't add the wrong sort of wood matter that might create a safety or functionality issue?

"Most biomass boilers run on wood chip, wood pellets, logs or briquettes. Others are designed to burn straw and hay bales, waste wood and shavings from manufacturing processes. Biomass boilers work most efficiently when the appropriate wood fuel is used, in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines."
