"The biggest reason some carpets shrink is the material they are made from. Natural fibres have a tendency to get smaller when they absorb moisture. Fortunately, this is not much of a problem these days, as most carpets are now made of synthetic fibres.

How to Fix Shrunken Carpeting? Some carpets may simply not be able to be fixed once they have shrunk. But the best method for tackling this problem is by modifying the edges of a carpet with fabric, thread, adhesives, or stitching where it has receded"

"The only thing i can think of is being laid with moisture in unless your talking long term. in that case anything that is held tight (carpet grips) will eventually loose its tension, get the knocker out and re trim would be my advise"
