What alternatives are there to porcelain or ceramic tiles?

What are some alternative stone tiles to consider that are less known than the usual choices like porcelain or ceramic? What are the pros/cons of these alternatives and are there any additional considerations I should take on board if considering these alternative options?

"You could look at slate or marble. However, you must consider where you are putting tiles as they may need to be sealed and will need a special adhesive. Size and pattern of tiles should also be considered and onto what substrate you are laying. The main consideration however is, does it look right for the location for you. If within 50 miles of Sheffield we are happy to discuss and install"

"Hi there Clive, here personally speaking porcelain is more durable than ceramic and lasts longer...
Porcelain however will need to be protected with a formula depending on the type of porcelain I hope that helps."

"Many forms of heavy-duty tiles but not good on stud walls if it’s lightweight you want use splashback sheets and they come in lots of colours and patterns"
