Do tree surgeons require certain qualifications? Is there anything else they might need to undertake such work?

"Yes they do, they need qualification which they get by passing different assessments and in felling trees up to 15" the felling over 15" then climbing and climbing with a saw you can't have one without the other and for you're insurance you need to be qualified so that need to be checked"

"Tree surgeons should be qualified for the work they are proposing to do. This would include certificates of competency in use of chainsaws on the ground, using chainsaws from a rope and harness, tree climbing, aerial rescue, aerial rigging and dismantling to name the basics. They should also be fully insured for indemnity against damage caused by any accident"

"Yes — tree surgeons do require specific qualifications, and there are other legal and practical requirements as well.

At a minimum, anyone using a chainsaw professionally should hold the relevant NPTC (City & Guilds) certifications for the tasks they are carrying out, such as chainsaw use, climbing, aerial rescue, and aerial cutting. These are the industry-recognised competence standards in the UK.

Beyond qualifications, a professional tree surgeon should also have:

Public liability insurance (suitable level of cover for tree work)

Employer’s liability insurance if they have staff

First Aid +F (Forestry) training

Compliance with recognised standards such as BS3998 (Tree Work Recommendations)

Properly inspected and maintained equipment (e.g. LOLER inspections for climbing gear)

For more complex or sensitive work (protected trees, highways, large or mature specimens), experience and understanding of planning controls, wildlife law, and risk management are just as important as certificates.

In short: qualifications are essential, but competence, insurance, and legal compliance are equally critical when undertaking tree work."
