Tips for hiring a good tradesman

Had a couple of quite bad experiences with tradesmen and want to do a better job of vetting before hiring. What actually separates reliable traders from the ones to avoid?

"As a builder myself, I'd say don't just go for the cheapest quote. A good tradesman will happily explain exactly what's included, provide a written quotation, and communicate well from the start. If they're difficult to get hold of before the job, it usually won't improve once they've got the work.

I'd always recommend checking recent reviews, asking to see photos of similar projects, and, for larger jobs, asking if you can speak to a previous customer. Make sure they're insured and don't be afraid to ask questions about how they'll carry out the work.

For bigger jobs, get three detailed quotes rather than just comparing the final price. A slightly more expensive quote can often save you money in the long run if the work is done properly the first time.

Most importantly, go with someone you trust. Good communication, honesty, and attention to detail are worth far more than saving a few hundred pounds at the star"

"I agree with ll that has been said in the other replies you have received. As a builder I have always found that previous customers are always happy for anyone looking for a trade to visit them and see what the work that had been carried out. I have always believed hat a good builder will always have a good relationship with past customers. Hope that helps."

"This is a great question and one I always tell people to do.
One check out their work pages look for reviews look at pictures of there work and also ask for contact details of past clients and see work they have done and have a chat and ask there own experience , don’t just see one tho go and see a couple of jobs.
Also ask questions about the job that you are wanting done. Google information and compare the answers to the ones that the tradesman gives you ."
