Spalled bricks

What does it mean to have spalled bricks and how can it be prevented, or at least, how can the risk of it occurring be held off for longer?

"What is Spalling Brick? Spalling brick occurs when moisture seeps into a brick and then goes through the freeze/thaw cycle. Over time this water damage causes the spalling bricks to crumble, flake, and even pop completely out of the.
The best way to deal with spalling is to prevent it before it occurs. The best and one of the easiest ways to do this is to apply a masonry sealant to the bricks which is specially designed to allow the bricks to breathe"

"Mostly spalling happens on older houses, probably built before WW2. The other guy was partly right with moisture and freeze thaw . It happens mainly because cement based mortar is used to repoint the wall rather than lime based. Older bricks are too soft for cement which creates a harder joint than the brick, so the water come out though the brick rather than the joint like it is supposed to.
How to prevent it is use lime mortar when you repoint older walls"

"Spalled brick caused by due to age related or damp course holding the water you could put some air brick weep holes in along the damp corse or put to try a dry out the building or even seal it but when nature took its course I’d replace it as it will only get worse due to time Thankyou"
