How big may a garage be before planning permission is needed?

It's not down to size there are other specifications to take into account such as wether you property has already been extended, where it is situated on your property. Your best option is to contact your local authorities planning division who will let yopu know.

You can build a garage or outbuilding on your property without planning permission as long as it's of a reasonable size – no higher than 4 metres. Do bear in mind though that outbuildings cannot take up more than half of the land around the original property.

This depends on where your gararge is located. If you are in a preservation area planning is usually required. Most other areas a gararge will come under permited development providing you do not exceed 50% of a rear garden area and it is 2meters away from a party wall or fence and does not exceed 3meters high. To be sure it is always best to ask your local department by submiting an enquiry.. they are usually helpful.
