Searching for a handyman

How wide a search should I do to find a handyman? Should I only hire workers local to my town or is ok to look a bit further afield?

"Local is usually better as any travel cost for the handyman will be reflected in the price they charge
the most important thing is the reputation of the handyman and makings sure he/she is properly insured and bonafide
Looking online to find out a rough idea of prices for the work you want done is also a good idea."
