Risk of using a chimney after fifteen years?

I have an old chimney and it hasn’t been used in I’d say about fifteen years now. I suddenly thought that for this winter, I’d like to have a chimney fire again for warmth. Is there any reason I should be concerned in using a chimney after so long? Is there a risk that dangerous substances have built up and will fill the air if I used a chimney after so many years? It’s just been on my mind and there’s still a while to go until the cold winter months, so I figured it would be good to find out first!
