"Best to to sand back to wood and refinish, but it is possible especially if you know the finish that is already on the floor so no reaction"

"Yes you can prime, and then varnish or paint your wooden floor to refine it but you will allways get a better job if you sand floor before doing any of the above,"

"You will need to do some prep even if you don’t sand it the floor will need slightly roughing up so new floor finish can key in to old surface"

"No not really, you want to remove any marks and it will need sanding to give a good key for re- finishing"

"Chances are if your floor's finish was applied before the 1970s (before polyurethane was used as a sealant), your floor is coated with wax, old-fashioned varnish, or shellac. If you do have wax, you still don't have to sand it down for a clean and shiny finish"
