"External Wall Insulation is a composite system of materials and coatings that can be fitted directly on top of existing render or brick wall.
While traditional render is usually done on Two coats in total thickness 10-12-mm or Mineral Renders such as well know K-Rend one coat scrapped render, INSULATED RENDER in UK typically used 30mm,50mm, 60mm,70mm also 100mm thick,Rear sides terraced houses may look thicker than neighbour next doors. With 50mm this difference can be hidden with rain down pipes at the corners. Advantage of insulated render is of course thermal efficiency and keeping home warmer. Also Silicone thin coat Renders are premixed in the buckets with colour choice from manufacturer/Supplier. "Insulating your solid walls could cut your heating costs considerably, and make your home more comfortable.

If your home was built before the 1920s, its external walls are probably solid walls rather than cavity walls.

Solid walls have no gap, so they can’t be filled with cavity wall insulation.Cavity walls are made of two layers with a small gap or ‘cavity’ between them.

Solid walls can be insulated though – either from the inside or the outside. This will cost more than insulating a standard cavity wall, but the savings on your heating bills will be bigger too"

"External insulation by far , your home will be much warmer as the U-value of letting heat out from your walls will be is far economically better than jus a simple Render ,the price is higher than render price but in long term money saving hope this answers your question kind regards Alexander"

"There would be a significant change in price from external insulation to just rendering due to the extra materials needed to be used.
Rendering would consist of just sealing the stone/brick/block work and creating a nice finish whereas external insulation is designed to keep the property warm as well as create a nice finish once rendered."

"It would depend on what you are wanting to achieve.

A re-rendering would need to include the removal of the old render, disposal of that material and then application of new render. Although there are thermal render products this wouldn't improve your homes ability to retain heat by much.

External insulation can be applied on top of the old render, and a new render system applied to the insulation to achieve a decorative finish. This would greatly increase the thermal properties of your home.

In summary, if you are looking to re-render then it would be worth finding quotes for external insulation too as the speed of the project would likely be similar, and the benefits of insulation may outwiegh any initial higher costs for materials in the long run."

"To render alone would be easiest and quickest ,
But to have external insulation and rendered would be the most beneficial as it would cut your energy costs in the long run, and also help maintain heat in your home.
Hope this helps

"The most benfitial would be insulation. Not much difference in time to do maybe an extra 2days for insulation system, but will pay dividends in saving heat."
