Refurbishing Stairs

We have a typical 50's built semi with a blockwork half wall instead of spindles on the stairs. We would like to change this to spindles and bannister. Is it a job for an experienced DIYer? If not, roughly how much would it cost to get in a tradesperson?

"Changing a blockwork half wall to spindles and a bannister is a significant renovation that requires some carpentry skills and knowledge. While it can be tackled by an experienced DIYer with the right tools and expertise, it's essential to ensure the structure is safe and meets building regulations.

If you decide to hire a tradesperson for this job, the cost can vary depending on factors like the size of the staircase, the materials used, and the location. On average, hiring a carpenter to replace a blockwork half wall with spindles and a bannister could cost anywhere from £500 to £1500 or more, including materials and labor.

It's advisable to get quotes from local tradespeople to have a more accurate estimate based on your specific requirements and the complexity of the job. Additionally, ensure the tradesperson you hire is experienced in staircase renovations and can provide references or examples of their previous work for peace of mind."

""As stated in other posts this is trades person not someone who does DIY.

Cost determined on ease of removal and size of what is being removed / rebuilt.

The price is certainly in the thousands not hundreds.

As has also been stated before waste is a major consideration in the project and cost of project.""
