"Sanding the wall down & putting a primer or standard white matt paint on the wall before the silk is the best thing to do"

"Yes you could use PVA, make sure its fully dry before applying white silk. Emulsioning the walls with whte matt emulsion could be a cheaper otion."

"Don’t use pva.are you using trade or retail paint.if it’s retail it won’t cover.id also avoid silk as it causes no end of issues.if your looking for a strong durable white get the Goodhome tough and durable from b&q,not very often you’ll hear a professional painter recommending anything but trade paint but this stuff is the best white emulsion about, you’ll have to sand the walls because you’ve got silk on it or you’ll get lots of little blisters in the paint but if you do get any allow them to dry thoroughly and they may settle back,if not you’ll have to sand the walls again and put another coat on"

"You would be well advised to apply two coats of Matt emulsion followed by one coat of emulsion glaze Good luck."
