Painting interior brickwork

We have an exposed brick chimney breast in the lounge that I think will look better painted white but the bricks look varnished. Can these be painted over?

"It's better to clean them with sand paper, then use a primer, after you can use paint"

"That will just be a waterproof sealant if the bricks looks varnished. You can paint this no problem with masonry paint"

"Yes, I would use a masonry paint but make sure it's well ventilated to ensure you give it enough time for the VOC to evaporate. I find wickes own brand to be the lowest in VOC and dries pretty fast compared to Dulux weather shield or santex. " VOC stands for volatile organic compounds" I would advise reading up about it before using a masonry though as some illnesses may be affected in different ways."

"The best way is to rub off the varnish and clean the areas, making sure there are no flakes, you can use emulation paint like a nice satin Mat finish."

"Hi Pete best thing would be to use PVA firstly water it down so 3 parts water to 1 Part pva this will give it good seal and applicator prior to painting you could do this x 2 coats if need be hope this helps"
