Macerator toilets - are they any good?

We're thinking of adding an extra toilet and we've been told it's tricky to plumb in and should consider installing a macerator. I'm not sure I like this solution as it seems overly complicated and a bit icky, so I would like the professional opinion of a plumber. Is this a good, reliable and hygienic solution, or not?

"The macerators are very good as long as it is installed correctly they are hygienic in everyday use it’s a bit icky when the unit fails tho.

Just don’t put dental floss ect down the toilet as items like this clog macerator units."

"In my opinion if there is a way of connecting to main stack with 110mm pipe then go down that route. If there’s no possible way then a macerated is only option, they are ok if used correctly"

"macerators are good if you buy a decent one in-between 200 to 600 pound."

"Hi
It depends where it is being sited. They are fine as long as only normal use is involved and noting other than bodily excoriations and toilet paper go down. Limit the loo paper and under no circumstances flush wipes or sanitary products. If space is limited they are ideal for a second loo under the stairs or where plumbing a 4” pipe down hill would be impossible. We use 40mm pipes and a macerated had a pump so can go pretty much anywhere. You will need electrical connections to it too. Hope this helps

"First of all, who did you listen to? Who told you that? A Plumber?
He's just trying to do the easiest job.
Macerators are reliable and hygienic but do require annual servicing and are very expensive.
Remember, most building work will be complicated to someone with no knowledge.
So talk to as many plumbers as you can find and decide from ALL opinions, not just your mate who hasn't got a clue.
Good luck"

"I don't recommend installing a macerator if at all possible. But if you have no choice then it's a great solution. Call out an experienced plumber to advise."
