Lime plaster finish

Is it possible to get a smooth finish with lime plaster? I want to authentically restore my cottage but I'm told modern plaster is better for painting over. Is this true?

"Essentially you can achieve the same level of finish with both modern and traditional plasters. It would be best practice to use the modern techniques. Not only is it more cost effective they can be achieved much more efficiently. For instance lime putty needs longer to dry and has to be maintained before painting as it hairline cracks upon drying. Re soaking, scoring a d filling these cracks are essential. Hope this helps. All the best"
