"A Lateral drain is a foul drain line that starts on someone's property, and when it leaves the property it becomes a lateral drain line before it drops into a main sewer, without a manhole chamber, as a lateral foul drain line becomes a shared drain line once in leaves the property boundary."

"A lateral drain is a length of pipe which carries wastewater away from your property to a sewer. It's usually located outside your property boundary, often under a public pavement or road. Most sewers are publicly owned and are maintained by your water company."
