What are potential impulse buys to avoid when having a kitchen renovated? In other words, what do homeowners often include in a kitchen renovation that later goes largely underused?

Careful planning is the key. One potential waste of money is too many draw units, these are significantly more expensive than standard cupboards. Although the draws give easier access to stored items, for things that aren’t used much, a cupboard can save you money compared to purchase and fitting of draw units.

As a business that offers a design service as an option, the most common reasons our clients have stated in the past for certain impulse buys when designing the kitchen, has largely been that the design consultant has suggested extras to incorporate into layout, and promoted them for bigger sales, which then turn out to be largely unused and unnecessary...
Items like cupboard carousels for corner units, full height pull out racks for larder cupboards etc...
The best way to avoid it happening is to have a concept that is based on flow of layout and the functionality of the space. Stick to your plan and only alter it if it benefits and adds to your original concept - if it doesn't then leave it alone!...
