Is tiling over tiles durable?

Will tiling over tiles reduce the lifespan of my bathroom splashback? I'm trying to save time and mess but I've read somewhere that the tiling won't last as long.

"It is perfectly reasonable to tile over one single layer of tiles. So long as the area has been prepared correctly the life span will be no different."

"Here are the top reasons that you should avoid tiling over tile:
Already laid tiles don't provide the best surface for new tiles to grip. ...
Not all adhesives can bond tile to tile. ...
You're adding extra height and weight with double the tiles. ...
Any gaps or pores can cause issues after tile is installed.

"100% don’t tile on top of old tiles. They will not last for long and you have to redoing again. Spent 2-3 day extra , take the risks about mess and do the job properly."

"Yes this is not a great idea tiles will crack and shatter as they have to much bounce and will not be firm enough"

"It is possible to tile over tile, not so much reccomend. You make a slurry mix. By using rapid set adhesive and PVA mix them both together and paint on to the tile using a roller. This will give the tile a textured surface. Once it's dry then use your knotch trowl to key over your adhesive best of using atleast a 10mm knotch over a slurry. Ensure that all existing tiles are secure on the walls and make sure you Butter the back of each tile you lay to ensure there is a complete coverage of adhesive"

"You can lay new tiles over the old ones, but first you need to properly prepare the substrate and check the condition of the existing tiles."
