Is residential air conditioning noisy?

We're thinking about getting air con but our bedroom walls aren't thick and I'm worried about noise. How loud is a typical wall-mounted unit when running?

Air con units now are very quiet when running, most of the time you dont even notice the sound. An indoor units should if installed correctly be around 20-30dB which is a whisper.
