Is it possible to trim tree roots?

Is it possible to trim the roots of a tree to prevent them spreading out too far?

"Yes it is possible to trim roots to prevent them from going out too far, but the tree puts the roots out for stability and nutrients/water. So it is best to avoid cutting roots if possible."

"If you trim the roots off it will cause the tree to slowly die the roots are sucks the water from the ground"

"A tree root is in the ground you can remove the stump and roots but u can't trim roots if you want Ur tree to live it would automatically kill the tree"

"You can do this depending on the tree and how far away (the distance from the tree trunk) you are planning to trim. There is an advised distance you should cut and how it should be done. Worth bearing in mind that there are various laws and legislations in place for trees so worth checking those before doing anything."
