Is an ONT box the same as a router?

Is an ONT box the same as a router? We're due to move into a new home which has an ONT box for fibre but I'm unfamiliar with what this box does.

"The ONT is the intermediate device between the external fibre entering your property and your router.
Your router from your service provider plugs directly into the ONT using an Ethernet cable."

"Hi,

The ONT box for the Fibre is basically a modem, You will need to connect this into the WAN port on your router instead of the ADSL port for your router to work.

Thanks"

"An ONT (Optical Network Terminal) box and a router are not the same, although they may be used together as part of a larger network setup.

An ONT is a device that is used to terminate the fiber optic cable and convert the optical signal into an electrical signal that can be used by a home or business network. It is typically used in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) or fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) networks to connect a building to the wider network.

A router, on the other hand, is a networking device that is used to connect multiple devices to a network and facilitate communication between them. It acts as a central hub for data traffic and can provide features such as wireless connectivity, network security, and traffic prioritisation.

In some cases, an ONT and a router may be combined into a single device, such as a fiber optic modem or a gateway. However, it's important to note that these terms refer to distinct pieces of hardware with different functions."

"No an ONT is an Optical Network Terminal and is also commonly referred to as a “fibre box”. The ONT is what allows the fibre optic cable to be connected from inside your home, out through your property and to the fibre network at the street."
