Increasing light without harming a tree

Can you increase light in a garden by trimming a tree in a way that doesn't harm the tree or surrounding ecology?

"Yes , it’s always better to thin a tree rather than reduce it if possible ( take all the branches off what are crowding the canopy to allow more light an air to flow through the tree). Hope that’s helped"

"yes of course you can prune a tree 20% or so and tree like to be prune they will sprout again and you can direct the branches in which way with in reason"
