How to get a neat finish with tile grout?

How do I get a neat finish when grouting? My first attempt looks a bit bumpy.

"What I do is go over the area I've tiled using a grout float making sure that I go all directions to avoid any misses or hollows and then leave it to firm up slightly. Clean down the whole area with a sponge and then repeat. The 2nd time I leave it to go off more than the 1st go and then sponge away any excess grout. Take a magic wipe and wipe over the joints vertically and then horizontally then buff up the tiles"

"Damp sponge squeezed nearly dry, rubbed across the joint not with it when the grout is going off. Sometimes I run my finger along the joint to smooth out."
