How much water should come out of a washing machine filter?

I've just cleaned the filter on our front-loader for the first time and quite a lot of water came out. Is that normal, or does it suggest something's blocked further up?

"Hi I would expect around a pint and a half of water to come out this is just the residue water sitting in the sump nothing to worry about I'd say . Stewart SJR appliances"

"Yes—that’s completely normal 👍
On a front-loading washing machine, the filter (often called the pump filter) sits at the lowest point of the system. Its job is to catch debris before it reaches the drain pump. Because of where it’s positioned, there’s always some leftover water sitting in that area, even after a cycle finishes.
So when you open it:
A noticeable amount of water draining out is expected
It’s basically the water that couldn’t be pumped out completely
That’s why manuals usually suggest putting a tray or towel down first"

"Perfectly normal. The washing machine has a kind of sump that always hold some water. Nothing to worry about"

"That’s pretty normal. Next time pull it forward and tilt it back to minimise the water."

"A big rush of water when you open a front‑loader’s pump filter is totally normal — the filter sits at the lowest point of the machine, so whatever water is left in the sump hose, pump housing, and the bottom of the drum will pour out, often a litre or two. It only suggests a blockage if the water keeps coming because the machine is still full, or if you’ve had drain issues or found the filter packed with debris. Otherwise, a strong initial gush that quickly slows and stops is exactly what you should expect."

"It depends on how much water is still in the drum. If it stops mid cycle due to the filter beimg blocked then yku cpuld potentially have a drum full of water come out.

Hope this helps

"Yes—what you saw is completely normal.

In a front-loading washing machine, the filter (often called the pump filter or drain filter) sits just before the drain pump. When you open it, you’re effectively opening part of the drainage system, so any water sitting in:

* the bottom of the drum
* the sump (lowest part of the tub)
* the drain hose leading to the pump

will come out.

How much water is “normal”?
Typically anywhere from a small trickle up to a litre or two (sometimes more) can drain out, depending on:

* how recently the machine was used
* whether it drained fully in the last cycle
* the design of the machine

When it’s NOT normal
It might suggest a blockage or issue if:

* water keeps pouring out continuously (not just a one-time release)
* the machine has been leaving clothes very wet
* you’ve noticed draining problems or error codes
* there’s debris repeatedly clogging the filter

Quick check you can do
After cleaning the filter:

1. Run a short rinse/drain cycle
2. Listen for smooth draining (no loud struggling pump sounds)
3. Check that water exits quickly through the waste pipe

If all that seems fine, you’re in the clear.

Practical tip:
Next time, place a shallow tray or towel under the filter before opening—it saves a mess.

If you want, tell me your washer model and I can give more precise expectations for it."

"It depends on the size of the washing machine, but if something is blocking the pump, you will be able to see it when you remove the filter, you can try to throw the pump blade to make sure that nothing is blocking .
On average, there is about 1 to 4 liters of water"
