How does a wireless thermostat for combi boiler work?

I’m looking to upgrade my thermostat so I can control heating and hot water separately. Is this possible with a combi boiler? If so, does anyone have good thermostat recommendations I can check out?

"For a boiler, a wireless thermostat works like a remote on/off switch with temperature sensing.

1. Wireless thermostat (room unit)
• Usually battery powered
• Sits in a living space (not wired to the boiler)
• Measures room temperature
• You set the target temperature or schedule

2. Receiver (boiler controller)
• Wired directly into the boiler’s control terminals
• Permanently powered
• Listens for signals from the thermostat

Yes this definitely possible. As you have a Combi boiler, your hot water temperature will be controlled from the boiler itself"

"It's quite simple. There is a receiver that's connected to the Boiler.
And then your programmer is like a remote control that talks to the receiver to turn your heating on or off"

"No its not possible for combi boiler. Combi boiler controls the hot water via the taps and the heating is only controlled via the thermostat. So if you buy a 2 channel thermostat then you are wasting money for no reason. All you need is a 1 channel thermostat (unless you got multiple heating zones ect).

I would recommend hive if you want it completely smart or drayton wiser if you want it half smart. Difference is the hive can be controlled from anywhere but the wiser only when you are connected to the same WiFi."

"With a combi boiler you can’t control heating and hot water separately in the same way as a system or regular boiler, because a combi only heats hot water on demand. There’s no stored cylinder to schedule.

You can upgrade the thermostat, but it will only control the heating, not the hot water.

For good smart options, look at:
• Hive – very user‑friendly
• Nest – learns your routine
• Tado – great if you want room‑by‑room control

All of them work well with combi boilers.

"Hi so for combi boiler the hot water is on demand with the taps the only controls are off or on. For heating there is thermostat to control the radiators for temperature and safety for home and boiler not overheating. There are hives which is good works from controls in house or WiFi from phone app"

"Wireless thermostat for combi boiler only controls heating temperature and scheduling. You need one zone thermostat. Two zone thermostat is for system boiler which can control heating system and hot water separately.
I recommend Hive, Nest thermostat."
