How deep should gravel be for a driveway

What is standard and why would one tradesman quote for doing it deeper than another?

"Depending on what stone, with a shingle stone no more than 2 inch’s but with a square cut stone like Cotswold stone or a lime stone chipping up to 4 inch’s as it compacts down ."

"50mm gravel and around 150mm sub base , some tradesmen may do it deeper at the customers requirements"

"There is no specific depth for a gravel driveway but if it was previously soft ground would preferably need digging out and a sub base putting in"

"You want to cover the subbase but you dont want to wheel spin and throw up the stones , personally i would say anywhere from 50 to 75mm max."

"20mm is plenty deep enough or your car will sink and skid"

"2 inch max otherwise it just piles up from cars. Have you looked at the grids you can put down first"

"Hi,
The most important factor is the sub base. As long as you put down a decent depth of hardcore for the sub base then 2-3 inches of gravel is fine. As with a lot of landscaping jobs its the parts you don't see that make the difference.

"The gravel should be 50mm for any type of stone on a tightly compacted sub base"

"Roughly about 60mm with 10mm either way depending on the angle and way the customer likes"

"Depending on the gravel used and the size of the aggregate depends on the depth ideally you would want a sub base of about 4/5inches roller edge and then 1/3 inces of gravel again depending on the type and size."
