Do you need to seal patio slabs?

Just had new Indian sandstone slabs laid and the contractor mentioned sealing them but didn't explain why. Does it need redoing every year?

I would never seal Sandstone as it often produces salt. Efflorescence is a reaction between sands cement and even the stone. It is a natural reaction that doesn’t always happen. Regularly had it happen when repointing patios. 
If you seal the paving you seal the salt in which doesn’t look great. So seal ot at your own risk.

I’d let the slabs be out for a few seasons to let the natural salts come out, other wise they bleed white underneath the lacquer of Resin
