"In the UK, a buried gas pipe should normally have a minimum cover of 375 mm (15 inches) in private ground such as gardens.

Typical depths are:

* Private gardens/soft ground: 375 mm minimum
* Under driveways or areas with vehicle traffic: 450 mm minimum
* Public roads/footpaths: deeper requirements apply, typically 600–750 mm+, depending on the authority and circumstances."

"At least 375 mm. Pipework must be one of the following: Pre-insulated copper pipe buried directly in contact with the earth , or pre-insulated pliable steel tube (track pipe), or uninsulated pipe inside a covered channel or outer buried pipe (sleeved). Gas pipes buried underground must be identified by yellow marker tape laid 100 to 300 mm above the pipe unless the route is recorded or obvious. Where the pipe is to be laid in a trench, the trench should be excavated deep enough to provide at least 75 mm of infill material below the pipe. This infill material should not contain stones rock concrete or any sharp material that could damage or penetrate the pipe. No compression fittings are permitted below ground."
