help joining copper pipes

I have heard that it’s essential to use lead-free solder to join copper pipes together? Why is this the case?

"Hi,
There are two main reasons.
One being a health issue regarding lead been in digested into your stomach.
Secondly an environmental issue with similar end results.
Lead is extremely poisonous!. When digested by drinking water or being deposited into the environment it eventually end up in our water system or in the ocean."
