Guidance on dying oak tree with TPO

I've got an old oak tree that's dying. It has a preservation order on it. Will a tree surgeon be able to work with me to stabilise it for as long as possible and guide me on replacing it when the time comes? The tree is on open land, so it's no real danger to people. I just want to make sure I'm fulfilling my responsibility. Is there anything I need to do before it's worked on?

"You must get in contact with the council before doing any work on the tree. If the tree is dying then it’s best the tree is taken down before it falls down. Which should be put across to the council"

"Ask your local tree officer from council to come have a look and he will let you know what to do then you will have tree report without this you can’t touch it"

"Hi Pete,

You can remove any deadwood from a tree with TPO on it without needing any permission from the council.

Veteran Oak trees in the state of decline can often cling onto life for many years. During this time consulting with an Arborist would be recommended. Soil enriching/oxygenating can help. As can remedial tree surgery. Propping up branches or cable bracing are other techniques to prolong life.
