Flood-proof house design

We're completely renovating a house and someone mentioned using an architect to help us. It's an area with a history of flooding. Would an architect be able to help design a more flood-proof home or is that down to a builder and external defences?

"Yes, definitely. In an area pone to flooding bringing in architectural assistance to design the layout to prevent as much future damage would be very beneficial long term"
