Fitting a non-standard door

I need a wood door for a low doorway. Is it better to build a door from scratch or adapt one?

"Always better to build from scratch for ascetic reasons.
But if you can adapt a door so that it does not look like its been it's been worked on by a blind woodsman then this will save you time and money, if you can make it look intended great this is always the goal."

"What i would do is sdapt i normally cut it down and if its an internal door us wood at 28 mm to pop the wood into the door with plenty of glue and clamp and leave over night and fit next day"

"Hi Kamil, it's not a straight forward yes or no answer really. Firstly it depends on the size of the opening. If its hugely smaller then perhaps best to have a door made. Next it depends on the door you want to hang, some doors have solid top and bottom rails which, although not recommended, one can still cut of a decent chunk without really affecting the integrty of the door. I would say, if the opening is less than 60mm smaller, and the door you are looking to hang has solid top and bottom rails then you should be ok. Personally I would take more of the bottom rail as it's usually deeper than the top. Hope this is of some help."

"depends on how much the size is to be changed, and how the door has been made, as you don't want to weaken the structure of the door. as you might have to cut down all 4 sides"

"A non-standard, that would depend on how low the head of the door will be. In my professional way it will be best to cut down and adapt one to suit.. A solid wooden door or lightweight will do..."

"adapt one would be the cheapest, to build one would be costly,"

"I suppose it all depends on how much you need to alter the door.
A good joiner can reduce a standard door in size quite significantly albeit it will require a bit of work and thought."

"This completely depends on the opening size for the door. If it's a really strange size then yes it would require a door to be made bespoke."

"If it is a door to a used room, then better to adapt a door. If for a cupboard space or non-essential area, then probably a sheet of board cut to size would suffice, as it could be painted to blend in."

"Depends what look u want, u can buy a door and adjust it to fit or buy timber and build to suite"
