"Hi,
The feed and expansion tank tends to be located in the loft and as the name suggests is designed to top up the central heating system with cold water as well as providing somewhere for the hot water to go in the event that your system overheats. It plays a key role in open vented systems and can reduce the likelihood of pressure damage caused to the system.
Hope this helps."

"The feed and expansion tank, header tank, or feed and expansion cistern as it is technically known, is a cistern which supplies the central heating circuit with water and accommodates the expansion of the water when it is heated by the boiler. It is typically made out of plastic."

"A feed and expansion tank is a requirement for an open vented system. It is in place to firstly keep the heating system filled with water and to accommodate the expansion of the central heating water as it is heated. This is done by a vent pipe that loops over the side of the tank and terminates above the water level. These systems are very rarely fitted now in new installations as they are less efficient than a modern sealed system"
