Durability of weed-supressant membrane

What is the life expectancy of the average weed-supressant membrane? How can you tell it needs to be replaced?

"I would recommend at least 7-8 years. The first thing to look out for is obviously weeds starting to come through or if there is and tears and frays in the membrane. Hope this helps."

"It's normally pretty good and you can tell when the durability goes because the weeds will start to come through"

"The ground will always be damp underneath so depending on what membrane you use. If it’s a cheap one it could perish within a few years. If it’s a decent one it can last many many years to come .."
