Is it ok to drill through joists to put wiring through? If so, where should I drill to avoid weakening them?

"You can safely drill joists for electrical and plumbing runs without weakening the joists, as long as you follow certain guidelines to not cause structural failure to your joist, Drilling is an option along the centre line of the joist , another option is to remove small notches from either the top or the bottom of the joist to allow passage

"The best place to drill your holes are through the center of the joist if possible"

"You ok to drill in the middle but no more than 50mm and they should be spaced properly and also some of them require reinforcement because they have a different purpose. Without looking its hard to say. The best thing is to ask the engineer where you bought them or ask any supplier tell them to give you a quote about something and ask any question that u want. Engineer is qualified to answer your question and so do I if I see drawing and pictures."

"Hi yes it’s ok I don’t know what size the joists are obviously but if you drill in the centre of the joist no bigger than 25-30mm holes and at least 200-250mm in from the ends"

"If its a new build I would recommend drilling the holes for cables approx 50mm down from the top, this way no fixings from above will hit the cable, also the cables won't interfere with the insulation between the joists"

"Best to drill at the ends of joists not mildly as it’s weaker also the size of the joist to take into consideration to the size of the holes for your wiring 25 mm recommended"

"The centre if possible is always best. Screws and nails are unlikely to hit cables etc at that point."

"If you’re drilling through joists to put wine or pipes through you need to allow for screws to screw either flooring down for floor if it’s a ceiling allow through centre of ceiling joist to allow the screws to hold the plasterboard so you need to be at least 50 mil up from either finished floor level or finished ceiling level"
