Does block paving need to be sealed?

Someone mentioned sealing extends its life. Is it something you really need to do, and how often?

"Cleaning block with a power wash takes the sand out so once cleaned you must re sand the driveway then seal the driveway . yes this will extend the life if it was laid properly entitally i would say every 6 months maximum every 12 months then it will protect the driveway thanke Benjamin"

"Hi Elly. Once the blocks have been sanded and compacted it is wise to seal the area. . It won't change the colour of the blocks but will harden the kiln dried sand and help protect the joints from any seeds that could germinate within the joints. Use a wrll k own sealant and not a basic cheap one. It really does make a difference. I hope this information is helpful for you ?
Thank you.

"Sealing block paving isn’t essential, but it is recommended. A quality sealer helps protect against stains, weeds, algae, and colour fading while extending the life of the paving. Most sealers last 3–5 years before reapplication is needed."

"Block paving does not have to be sealed, provided it has been installed correctly on a suitable sub-base and with kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints.

However, sealing can offer a number of benefits, including:
• Enhancing and maintaining the colour of the paving
• Helping to reduce staining from oil, dirt, and algae
• Slowing down weed and moss growth
• Protecting the surface from general weathering

We normally recommend waiting at least 3-6 months after installation before applying a sealant, as this allows the paving to settle properly and any natural salts to disperse.
