Does air conditioning need servicing like a boiler?

We've had a split air con unit in the living room for a couple of years and no one's ever looked at it. Should it be getting an annual service and who does this?

"Hi Cheryl, Yes air conditioner needs to be serviced at least once every year. Regular servicing keeps it efficient, prevents breakdowns, improves cooling, and extends its life. The inside unit filters and fan blade get covered in dust and sometimes you get mould built up which can be detrimental to health. The outside unit coils also gets blocked which needs to be cleaned out otherwise it could lead to failure. It has to be serviced by a qualified AC engineer.
Thank you"

"Yes, residential air conditioning systems should be professionally serviced at least once a year to maintain efficiency, ensure warranty validity, and prevent costly breakdowns. For units used heavily, year-round"

"Usually an a/c unit requires an annual service every 12 month to keep it in line with warranty requirements and also ensure the systems efficiency and it's lifespan. This can be performed by a competent HVac engineer."

"Yes — a split air conditioning system should ideally be serviced regularly, much like a boiler, especially if it’s used for both cooling and heating.

An annual service is usually recommended to:

Clean or replace filters
Check refrigerant levels and pressures
Inspect electrical connections and controls
Clean the indoor and outdoor coils
Make sure the condensate drain is clear
Check overall efficiency and performance

Regular servicing helps keep the unit efficient, reduces energy bills, improves air quality, and can prevent expensive breakdowns later on. A neglected unit can become noisy, lose performance, or develop mould and bacteria inside the filters and coils.

The work is normally carried out by an F-Gas certified air conditioning engineer or an HVAC company. It’s important they’re F-Gas certified because they work with refrigerants.

For a typical domestic split unit, servicing is often around £80–£180 depending on the system size and location."

"es, aside from electricity costs, you should budget for regular MVHR maintenance, mainly replacement filters, which typically need changing every 6–12 months depending on air quality and manufacturer guidance. Filter costs can vary but are usually a modest ongoing expense, while occasional servicing, duct cleaning, and system checks may also be recommended every few years to keep the unit running efficiently and maintain good indoor air quality. Keeping vents clean and ensuring the system is properly balanced can also help avoid performance issues and unnecessary repair costs over time."
