Do you need building regulations for a garage conversion?

I know planning permission might not be needed but what about building regs? Is a garage conversion one of those jobs where you need to worry about sign off from the council?

"Many people do this without permitted Development and get away with it for years however when you sell it will show up on the survey my advice is to look up and down your street and if someone else as done the same work the chances are you will get permission from your local planning

"Generally no, if the garage is attached to the house as it will be internal work.

Even when planning isn’t required, you will almost always need Building Regulations approval because of:

* Insulation upgrades
* Fire safety
* Ventilation
* Structural work
* Electrics
* Escape windows/doors"
