Damp patches around chimney

We have got damp around our chimney breast what could it be? It appears to be working its way up from the floor.

"Hello,

If you have dampness coming through your chimney breast you have moisture penetrating through the internal side of the chimney breast via capillary action this will cause dampness to appear and eventually due to rise in humidity mould growth will become active.
