Cost to convert tarmac driveway to block paving

Question

Our tarmac is looking very tired and we want block paving instead. The drive is about 40 square metres. Does the tarmac need to come up entirely or can blocks go on top?

You can block on top if you have atleast a brick and a half down from the damp course if the drive meets the house.

Some tarmac would have to come up so that the block paving meets your edging curbs at the front of the drive. I would also put holes in the exhibiting driveway to allow for drainage.

Leaving it down I personally am against it.  As you can not get a nice level from the front of the drive to the back.   What I would suggest is to take the tarmac up. Dig the driveway out, then all the old tarmac use as a base under the type 1.  Remember the sub base is the most important part of the driveway.

I wouldn't recommend leaving the tarmac in place it could cause compaction issues in the future toto many variables to give a price without inspecting

It would need to fully come up, it would be a full reinstall for 40m2 it would be a rough estimate of £5000 from us

You would definitely have to remove tarmac, your sub base needs to be at a minimum of 60mm - 75mm in depth, then you would need at least 20-30 mm of sand or type1 aggregate dust, screed and level off for your block paving so sit correctly, I hope this has help, have a great day. Kind regards,

I would recommend having it all up and starting again and having It done properly. As the correct prep work ensures durability and anyone coming to lay over old tarmac is essentially putting there reputation on the line by trusting the current sub base . Roughly be around £4800 by us but again would need to see the job before locking in any price

Take off the tarmac take off 20cm of soil ,fill it up with ballast waked with wake plate sand and fit the new paving best solution

It will all depend on the height of your existing timeout driveway below your damp course and what sort of drainage you have.
To give any sort of long-term guarantee you would expect a contractor to remove everything as you need a good 125 mm of compacted Lean mix concrete subbase to take the new block driveway
To give you a guide, we dig out 225mm, put in 125mm of concrete subbase, then 15 mm of sharp and screwed and then the 50mm block compacted. It does depend slightly on the type of blocks, but you should be looking at around £150 per metre plus vat to install

The tarmac will need to be lifted but it could be recycled to build up to level to save you some money
