Hello In the past I have used fused spurs for any and all appliances that are built-in to work tops or under the counter, but I had been told recently that this wouldn’t be necessary and that I could just run these appliances via sockets in adjoining cupboards. Should this be what I am doing instead nowadays or am I fine to continue as I have been? I want to be sure that I am installing appliances as safe as I can.
A mouse or rat has chewed the parts of the jacket layer off some appliance cables in the garage. Is it safe enough to wrap electrical tape over the gaps to fix them? Or what can I use instead of electrical tape?
I am adding some extra sockets to the ring main in my bedroom. I have done this before and used open grommets in the back boxes to protect the cables. However I've seen in one diy book that we should only use blind grommets and cut a hole in them just big enough for the cable - apparently this is to hinder fire / smoke spreading in event of a fire. Is this correct?
I’d like to put a small light and socket in my little potting shed and an outside light with a motion sensor. Someone has suggested I’ll need a new consumer unit for these 3 things, even though the socket will hardly ever be used. Is this necessary do you think?
The electrical wires in my fuseboard are red and black in colour, Is this old wiring? and do I need to have a rewire?
I have added a new double socket above an original one, and now it's time to plaster in the gap (which was used to get cables in), but do I need to trunk the wires before plaster them? I get mixed answers on this topic. And if so, what sort of trunking should use. Thank you!
Price too install electric cooker socket . Just a ordinary double socket there at the moment on the old electric oven . Can it not just be plugged in too the old socket ?
Hi everyone, I hope you can help. We’ve just moved into a new house and the conservatory doesn’t have any light fixtures. It does have a light switch already installed so there is definitely wiring in there. We want to install a wall light. Is this something I can do myself with no experience or do I need to hire an electrician?
I’ve just bought a portable induction hob from Ikea as a temporary replacement for my freestanding cooker, but am wondering if it is okay to plug this into the cooker socket with the red switch, or should I just plug it into a normal socket? Just want to check before I plug it in.
I have an electric shower but I am concerned as there was a burning smell coming from it the last time I used it. What might be the cause of this and how can it be fixed?
