Can you use polyfilla on wood?

I want to fill some gaps and small splits in wooden window frames before painting. Can standard polyfilla or do you need a specific wood filler?

"Hi Catherine,
Short answer is yes. Clean out cracks with a brush, maybe even vacuum. Paint some PVA sealant / adhesive onto and into the cracks. Allow a couple of hours to dry, then fill. When it’s dry, Sand down to get a smooth finish. PVA again, then paint."
