Can you tile over existing tiles?

We've got ceramic wall tiles in the kitchen that are firmly stuck but we don't like the colour. Can new tiles go on top, or does the old layer have to come off first?

"As long as the tiles are firm and properly cleaned you can tile over tile.
Just keep in mind cables are long enough to reconnect and anything else that might be affected by building out the walls."

"Hello you you can. Many tile products on the market. I use Amazon
Prime + Grip . Excellent product. Clean off existing tiles grease etc. Then apply 1- 2 coats by roller. Contains grit in so has great adhesive quality. To retile over the top."

"Hi.
Yes You can tile on the top of the tiles. The big problem is with trims as You will end up with the gap at the back.Taking existing tiles off would probably mean replacing plasterboard and is quite messy and noisy.Majority of my customers decide to get the tiles off as it leaves a lot better finish.Hope this helps."

"No you can’t tile over tile, existing tiles need to be removed first then the area that’s going to be retiled needs to be prept correctly before retiling"

"Yes, you can tile over existing tiles. In the past I used primer from mapei (must have) and it was good."

"Yes it can be done, not best practice, but ensuring their primed and using a proper powder bag adhesive (Not pre mix tub rubbish) they will grab the existing ones fine. I've ripped out both kitchens and bathrooms with multiple layers of tiles that have clearly been bonded for years. So you have nothing to worry about, it's just not best practice. I hope this helps."
