Can you apply new silicone sealant over old bathroom sealant without removing it first?

The old silicone sealant was an absolute pain to remove before we put in new stuff last time. Can I skip that step and just apply a new layer over the old so it looks a bit fresher? Or do I really need to rip out the old stuff first?

"Ideally you need to remove the old silicone before you apply new."

"I'd say not really, it’s not a good idea. New silicone won’t properly stick to old silicone, even if it looks clean. It usually peels away pretty quickly, which can lead to leaks, mould coming back, and the job needing to be redone almost right away."

"You must remove old sealant first. Silicone does not like to stick to silicone and you will inevitably get leaks if you just apply it over the top. I would suggest buying some Multi-solve to help loosen the old silicone - it’s available online."

"No it's not possible as it won't stick and it would be a waste of money and time and effort"

"You definitely have to remove the old one before you put a new one"

"Well, you can do that but you shouldn't do it because it will last just for a few months.
The correct way is to rip out the old silicone, clean it up and after apply the new silicone."

"As boring as it can be😩 it is best to remove all existing silicone, clean area properly and then apply new silicone. 👍"

"You'd be better off getting some multi solve or sealant remover to remove the old stuff to make it easier. I think the time you'd spend trying to go over old stuff it won't look the greatest , your better off using a high quality sealant like BT1 that will stand the test of time"

"No. You can not just apply silicone on an old one. Ut would not seal. All you do is first remove the old ones and clean round the bath properly, then apply the new silicone round the bath, or the area in question.
Thanks."
