Can I fit insulation myself?

I would love to increase the insulation in my home. It’s a semi-detached house. I’m a bit strapped for cash at the moment, so I am wondering what type of insulation work can I undertake by myself? Is it safe to do so? Will I need planning permission or anything?

"You will be fine just be careful, most people will use crawl boards to do this, make sure you step on the joists if unsure leave it to a professional however this is a cheap job in it self as some insulations are on £20-30 a roll normally this take 8 rolls to do a loft space make sure eaves or stuff but leave a 10mm gap for air flow overwise this could cause condensation problems"

"Check details of Green Homes Grant Scheme. You might get all of your house insulated for free.
