Bosch Build-in Fridge/Freezer

The fridge recently started have the metallic smell inside the fridge, but not inside the freezer. Both the fridge and freezer are still cooling/working as normal. There is no sign of any refrigerant leakage. Any spoiled food and lack of cleaning can be ruled out as the possible cause. The appliance is 8 years old.

My questions are:

(a) What are the likely causes?
(b) Is it easily repairable?
(c) Would I be better off to just replace the appliance instead of attempting to repair it?

"Likely causes include internal liner deterioration, plastic breakdown, drain contamination, or airflow issues in the fridge section. It’s usually minor and sometimes fixable with deep cleaning or part replacement. At 8 years old, if the smell persists after cleaning, replacement is often more cost-effective than repair."

"Check for ice buildup in the fridge compartment. Especially behind any raised panels. Without sounding judgemental, also check there is not something hidden, maybe behind any drawers or panels that is going off."

"I would replace it personally. It could be one of a number or combination of a number of things. You would need to repair/replace different parts until the smell has gone which will take a fair amount of time and effort and possibly trades people. Just buy a new one"

"There should be a snall drain hole at the back of the fridge were the water that moves down to the lowerre part of the fridge so it can avaperate some times this hole gets blocked you need to get a straw and force it down this hole but do not let go of it do this a few times the smell sould go."

"A metallic smell in an 8-year-old fridge, with normal cooling and no obvious food spoilage, is likely caused by overheating electrical components like a fan motor, a failing compressor, or a faulty relay. A "hot metal" scent often indicates that insulation or plastics are overheating near electric parts, or the compressor is struggling."

"your freezer’s refrigerant could possibly be leaking and the best possible way to fix it is replace it or buy a new one as it will probably stop working at some point"

"Since you have already ruled out food spoilage and basic cleanliness, the metallic smell in your 8-year-old fridge likely points to aging internal components or a maintenance issue hidden from plain sight.

Likely cause: Dirty Drip Tray or Drain Pipe or overheating causes"

"Hi you would be better to replace than repair to be fair."

"I would say to replace it with new one and give up on trying to fix as this would be the easiest solution"

"A metallic smell coming from the fridge compartment (but not the freezer) while everything is still cooling normally usually points to a localized issue within the fridge section, rather than a major system failure. Here’s a professional breakdown:

(a) Likely causes
1. Internal component wear or oxidation
Over time, metal components (such as the evaporator cover, screws, or internal fittings) can begin to oxidise slightly, especially in a moist fridge environment. This can produce a faint metallic or “chemical” smell.
2. Drainage system contamination
Even if the fridge appears clean, the condensate drain hole and drip tray can develop residue or bacterial build-up, which sometimes gives off unusual smells that are perceived as metallic.
3. Plastic or liner degradation
After 8 years, internal plastics can begin to degrade slightly, particularly if exposed to temperature fluctuations. This can create a synthetic/metallic odour.
4. Fan or airflow system issue
If your model has a fan in the fridge compartment, dust or slight wear on components can create a smell when air is circulated.
5. Early-stage electrical component ageing
While less common, wiring insulation or electronic components can emit a faint odour before failure—though this is usually more “burning” than metallic and would be a concern.

(b) Is it easily repairable?
• Yes, in some cases:
• Cleaning the drain hole and drip tray is straightforward and often resolves odour issues.
• Replacing small internal parts (covers, fans) is usually low to moderate cost.
• Less straightforward:
• If the smell is due to internal liner degradation or inaccessible components, repair becomes impractical.
• Electrical-related smells should be inspected professionally and may not be worth repairing depending on the fault.

(c) Repair vs replace

Given the appliance is 8 years old, here’s a practical guideline:
• Repair is worth it if:
• The issue is resolved with cleaning or a minor part replacement.
• No electrical or sealed-system faults are involved.
• The appliance is otherwise in excellent condition.
• Replacement is the better option if:
• The smell persists after a deep clean (including drain system).
• It’s linked to ageing materials or internal structure.
• You want improved energy efficiency and reliability (modern units)"
