How to make a small box room feel bigger

We have got a tiny third bedroom that feels very claustrophobic (2.2m x 2.5m). Aside from keeping it minimal are there any practical changes that will make a difference?

"Hi Carol,

There are a few simple changes that can make a small room feel much bigger:

- Use light colours on the walls and ceiling.
- Install built-in or wall-mounted storage to keep the floor clear.
- Fit a large mirror to reflect natural light.
- Use slim furniture that suits the room size.
- If you're replacing the flooring, laying the boards in the direction of the longest wall can also help the room feel more spacious.

If you'd like, I'd be happy to help with any of these improvements and offer practical suggestions for your room."

"Yes. In a room that size (about 2.2 m × 2.5 m, roughly 5.5 m²), small design changes can make it feel noticeably less cramped, even though they won’t change the actual dimensions.

Here are the changes that usually have the biggest impact:

* Choose light, consistent colours. Soft whites, warm greys, or pale beige on the walls, ceiling, and trim blur the room’s edges and make it feel more open. A ceiling painted the same colour as the walls can also reduce the “boxed-in” feeling.
* Use furniture with visible floor space. A bed on slim legs or a floating bed frame lets you see more of the floor, creating a greater sense of openness.
* Go vertical. Install shelves above the bed or desk and use tall, narrow storage rather than wide furniture. This keeps the floor clear.
* Replace swing doors where possible. If practical, a sliding or pocket door eliminates the space needed for a door to open, making the room easier to use.
* Add a large mirror. Position it opposite a window or where it reflects natural light. This is one of the simplest ways to make a small room feel brighter and deeper."
