Best paint or treatment to stop metal rusting

I live in a seaside town and my home has a metal balcony rail which is prone to rusting. What's the best paint or treatment to protect it from the salty sea air?

"Hi I'm local to a seaside in North wales and would recommend to clean the rust away and paint with a zinc based primer and then a top coat of a colour"

"Depending on how much has rusted, if it is just surface rust, then you could get somebody to sand the affected area down to where it is good metal and then use either galvanise paint or an oxide paint and then finish with a good quality metal paint like hammerite. If it's to far gone, then I would suggest getting it replaced and then having it dipped in hot galvanised liquid which a decent metal firm would know and should advise you on this, especially as you live by the sea and the air is salty. Then have it powder coated, it will be a bit more expensive but it would last you a lot longer in the future."

"The best way forward for steel railings would be to have them taken to shot blasters to remove all paint which takes it back to the bare steel.

Then use a grey oxide paint as a undercoat before painting with a top coat preferably hammerite alternatively you could have them galvanised or powder coated.

Powder coating however does have a tendency to chip which ruins the paintwork but can be touched up with a spray paint.

If Galvanised you can’t paint over it however it stops rusting and you would have to use a grinder to get rid of excess galvanised which is basically molten zinc."
