Is 4:1 the best mortar mix for pointing brickwork?

"Hi, most people use a 4/1 mix above the damp course, but a 5/1 mix can blend in ok aswell , especially with a softer brick as a strong mix will only crack in time ."

"The standard ratio for average mortar mix is 3:1 or 4:1 for bricklaying. If you are using a pointing mix, then you should have a ratio of 1:4 or 1:5 mortar to sand.

"For brick and block above ground 4-1 is a good mix if below ground 3-1. Also if it’s a softer facing brick 5-1 would be acceptable"

"Depends on what sand your using but 3 to 1 is much better if wall is still damp from hosing down and it's not a red hot day"

"4:1 is a good mix and perfectly fine for pointing.
You may need to use lime in place of cement if you brickwork is old"

"4 sand 1 cement feb mix and water don’t rush it and let it mix"
